IDN support when creating Folders

Folders/sub folders may be created in any native language supported by UTF8.

Note:
Those who manage tel domains and created folders in native languages or who may have populated the TELcp database directly from CTH should remove the tel domain from TELcp and resubmit. This process will not affect any records in the CTH. It only deletes the URLs in the TELcp database.

However, those tel Owners with active tel Users, please contact TELcp support for further instructions, prior to removing the tel domain from TELcp powered sites.

Folders created with IDN (in many languages) support can be seen here at demo site. http://demo.telcp.tel

Just the beginning of a new era for the .tel.

Newsletter diciembre 2011

.telegraph newsletter - December 2011

In This Issue:

Stay Connected

Welcome to the final community newsletter of 2011. Season's Greetings to you from all of us at Telnic here in London.

It's been a busy year for the team at Telnic. As you will probably have seen, we've been building relationships with more and more yellow page organisations from China through to Finland that are now starting to provide .tel names to their customers. We were also delighted to be named a Cool Vendor by Gartner earlier this year, recognizing the potential in .tel to provide telecommunications providers with a real opportunity to deliver real-time collaboration and presence services. We launched short and numeric-only .tel domains in the middle of the year and continue to see these being registered on a daily basis.

We continue to review the .tel service and review its cost-effectiveness and the features it delivers through 2012. We have seen important updates to this service, outlined throughout the course of the year in the newsletters. A development update also follows in this newsletter for early 2012.

This coming year should prove to be an even more interesting one and there will be some important announcements from Telnic which we hope will drive even more interest, awareness and adoption of .tel. More information about this will be forthcoming in early 2012.

Finally, we'd like to thank those within the community that share their stories about .tel as well as let us know their thoughts and ideas with regards to the .tel service. We're delighted that so many individuals and businesses are experiencing real benefit from .tel, its ease of use and mobile readiness. We know this will continue through 2012 and beyond and remain committed to delivering a cost-effective and valuable service for all of those businesses and individuals that can benefit from owning their own presence online and who do not have the skills, budget and time to work with traditional services today.

Kind regards to you all,

Mobile Search Rises to the Top!

Some of you may have noticed that we've rolled out an update to the search functionality on mobile devices.

Those community members with complex .tel domains or directories and which choose the 'Search this .tel' option rather than the 'Search all' option will now see that the search box appears at the top of the smart phone view. This should assist those seeking information within your .tel names to access the search functionality much more quickly, rather than having to scroll down to the bottom of the page (potentially through 100 different records).

The 'Search all' option still provides the search box at the bottom of the page, as it is more likely that the viewer will take a look through the contents of that .tel prior to deciding whether to seek the information from another source.

Development Update

Our anticipated development and release schedule for Q1 2012 will include:

  • Roll-out of new templates currently in development
  • Support for a number of video services (YouTube, Vimeo, and DailyMotion) to be linked to and played from within the .tel proxy pages (which will be manageable programmatically using the API) and presented in the body of the .tel domain
  • Dedicated Smart phone search results for a consistent mobile look and feel
  • Grouping of .tel domains to be searched in a cluster (time permitting)

What on Earth Are: Rich Snippets?

Snippets are the information presented by a search engine back to the person searching with a summary of what it thinks is the best description for that site. Often, these snippets include the search term or keywords that the person viewing the results entered when making the search.

Rich snippets are segments of structured information (such as business listing information, contact information or restaurant reviews) that website owners (and of course .tel owners!) can alert search engines to by using code called micro-formats. By using this method, site owners can make increasingly sure that Google's search engine knows for sure what type of information is being presented and which bits should be relevant to show to someone searching.

For .tel owners, unlike website owners, this is done automatically whenever you populate information within your .tel. Recently, we've updated the way in which .tel presents this information within the template, which should deliver even better information back to Google and as a result, present even better information back to the person searching so they can click on the .tel to proceed with their search.

Please note, marking up your data for rich snippets won't affect your page's ranking in search results, and Google does not guarantee that markup on any given page or site will be used in search results.

Portfolio and Brand Owners:
One .tel to Rule Them All!

If you're a brand owner or have a portfolio of related .tel domains and you don't want all of them to be found online or have the time to populate all of them now, help is now at hand. You may have purchased multiple .tel variants or defensive registrations, but you don't want all of these to be seen or don't want to put duplicate content in (not a good idea from a search engine perspective).

Now, all you need to do is list the main .tel that you wish to promote within the .tel domains that you don't want to use right now. This will result in the visitor being diverted to your main .tel if they type in one of your other .tel names into the browser or discover it some other way.

Remember, this will only work if there's no other information in the .tel domain that you wish to divert automatically to your chosen main .tel domain, so make sure that the domain you wish to divert has no other visible content in it (this will not affect the use of MX records, enabling you to continue to use the domain for email for example). You can also divert it to a sub-page of another domain, but it won't divert to any other domain extension – this is specifically a feature for managing multiple .tel domains.

Telnic's Top Ten from 2011

As we near the close of another year, we would like to give special thanks and revisit some of the best resources created by the .tel community in 2011. As with last year, we struggled to shortlist 10 resources — so if you have favourites that you don't see here, don't forget to let us know as we will continue to promote more of your .tel's in 2012.

Not Just a Pretty Face: Belaray, .tel & QR Codes

Belaray is a Dermatology and Oculoplastic Clinic based in New York. Our highly-skilled board certified Dermatologists, Dr Jeffrey Ellis and Dr Amy Slear, use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to ensure our patients' comfort and safety.

Having a strong online presence and being easily reachable is very important to us.  There are many outstanding local dermatologists that our patients can choose from, but enabling patients to learn more about the special elements that make our practice unique is important.

A colleague first told me about .tel domains, and we were excited about integrating them into our business. Now all of our means of contact (including on-line appointment requests) can be found at belaray.tel.  To make it even easier to get to belaray.tel, we have incorporated a special QR code into our business card.

Belaray

Having a .tel has been a great way to bring all of our points of contact into one place that can easily and quickly be shared - which is further facilitated by the QR code.  Want to call us? Fax us?  Set your navigation/gps to us? Make an online appointment?  It is all there on our .tel - a streamlined site that quickly loads on our patients' phone.

We have been very happy with the professional layout, quick load speed, and easy customization of our .tel domain. In our opinion, .tels are really for everyone.  Both individuals and businesses can benefit from using a .tel. If you want to let others know how to find you - and how you want to be found - then a .tel is for you.

All Wrapped Up with .tel!

Cover Your Car We are Cover Your Car, based in the NW of England in St Helens, Merseyside in the UK and we specialise in fitted, tailored and bespoke car covers.

In addition to our phone sales line, being discoverable on the internet is very important to us and we have numerous ways that clients can contact us online including email, live chat support, Twitter and Facebook.

We first heard about .tel domains through our hosting company, Blacknight.ie, and registered coveryourcar.tel in May 2010. During that time we've found it easy to update and maintain. We've included links to our main website on there as well as brought all of our other social media and contact information together in one single place. In total, it centralises six different ways that customers can get in touch with us, as well as sharing links to our blog and YouTube channel.

Coveryourcar.tel has helped our business as it's a single place for us to share all our contact details, which we can promote via our social networking streams and refer people to it on emails, business cards, letterheads etc.

In our opinion, anyone serious about having an online presence and needs a central online point for contact information would benefit from a .tel. Also, with the ever increasing trend towards browsing via smart phones, the .tel app which is free to download, ties in brilliantly with finding information quickly.

LingPerfect: Talking Your Language

LingPerfect is a medium-sized language service provider company. Our business is the translation of all kinds of documents and the localization of websites, software, multimedia and other types of content to and from more than a hundred languages.

Our clients reach us by email, the online quotation form, phone, fax and on Skype. They appreciate the choice of different contact methods to reach us, and our 24/7 global availability. For several years, we have been using search-engine optimisation (SEO) to help new customers find us.

We always look for the internet tools to reach new customers throughout the world, and recently we heard the stories about the unique technology behind the .tel domains, and decided to register the lingperfect.tel domain for ourselves.

We saw the benefits and the results immediately: it is extremely easy to add content to the .tel and keep it up to date. The most important benefit is that our .tel data has been so quickly and efficiently picked up by search engines, without any additional effort from our side. We can say that we are very happy with this service. It has required only such a tiny investment in terms of money, and so little working time is spent by our staff to maintain our .tel domain, and it brought instantly visible benefits.

We also like the way the information is presented on the .tel. Many of our potential customers need an instant and simple solution, without spending too much time researching information on the web. Now, thanks to our new lingperfect.tel domain, we can give them the express answers they need.

Our lingperfect.tel site is a very important addition to our marketing strategy due to its SEO potential and the concise presentation of our company to the customers using various types of communication devices. The .tel is so easy to manage, and it took us just a few minutes to set it up. I would recommend it to any company or individual, who want to become more visible on the Internet. I think this is an amazing idea.

.tel Helps the St. Royals Swing in Toronto

Royals

Who are you, where are you based and what do you do?
I'm Andrew Dalrymple, owner and founder of St. Royals Entertainment based in Toronto, Canada.  St. Royals Entertainment provides fully customizable professional live bands for corporate events, galas, private parties, and weddings.

How important is being discoverable on the internet or contactable by your clients to you?
Being discoverable on the internet is absolutely crucial. About 40% of my business comes from organic traffic.

How do you enable your clients to reach you?
I have as much of a web presence as possible.  Website, blog, twitter, Facebook and a .tel page.

When did you hear about .tel domains and what were your thoughts?
I heard about .tel when an entrepreneur friend contacted me telling me about .tel.  She said that .tel has a lot of potential to become a new standard for mobile-based browsing and that I should register my domain ASAP!  I looked into it and agreed with her assessment. It's like publishing a business card for everyone to access with more information than one could really fit on a business card!

Who might benefit from a .tel?
I think anyone who is developing a business that depends on a strong web presence can benefit from .tel.  Of course individuals can easily create a .tel page as a compliment to a resume etc.

What's your experience been having used it for a while?
My experience has been positive.  My analytics shows that I have been getting some new traffic to my site from my .tel page.

How does having a .tel help your business specifically? What are the major benefits of having a .tel for your company?
It gives a one-page snap-shot of my business and has all of my contact information.  It gives people the ability to quickly find my business and also find all of my contact information.

What other online marketing tools/campaigns do you employ? How does having a .tel fit into your marketing strategy?
A basic part of my marketing strategy is to simply be everywhere on the web - fully accessible from as many relevant places as possible.  Google maps, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs are a few examples.  All of these tools help direct people to my business from as many angles as possible.

How would you explain to a layperson what a .tel is and what the benefit would be to them?
.tel is an online business card.   There are direct links to my business web pages and contact information, as well as a brief description of the business.

What do you think the future holds for .tel?
I believe it is extremely useful for mobile browsing especially. It's low-bandwidth and gives all relevant information that a new client would need about my business on the go.

Nuevas funcionalidades

New .tel functionality released

Today, we've updated the .tel service with the following features as referred to in our September newsletter.

1)  Mobile Search for Directories

We've rolled out an update to the search functionality on mobile devices. Those community members with complex .tel domains or directories and which choose the 'Search this .tel' option rather than the 'Search all' option will now see that the search box appears at the top of the smart phone view.  This should assist those seeking information within your .tels to access the search functionality much more quickly, rather than having to scroll down to the bottom of the page (potentially through 100 different records).

The 'Search all' option still provides the search box at the bottom of the page, as it is more likely that the viewer will take a look through the contents of that .tel prior to deciding whether to seek the information from another source.

2)  .tel Redirection

If you're a brand owner or have a portfolio of related .tel domains and you don't want all of them to be found online or have the time to populate all of them now, help is now at hand.  You may have purchased multiple .tel variants or defensive registrations, but you don't want all of these to be seen or don't want to put duplicate content in (not a good idea from a search engine perspective).

Now, all you need to do is list the main .tel that you wish to promote within the .tel domains that you don't want to use right now.  This will result in the visitor being diverted to your main .tel if they type in one of your other .tel names into the browser or discover it some other way.

Remember, this will only work if there's nothing else in the .tel domain that you wish to divert automatically to your chosen main .tel domain, so make sure that the domain you wish to divert has no other content in it.  You can also divert it to a sub-page of another domain, but it won't divert to any other domain extension – this is specifically a feature for managing multiple .tel domains.

3)  Rich Snippets

We've updated the way in which .tel presents this information within the template, which should deliver even better information back to Google and as a result, present even better information back to the person searching so they can click on the .tel to proceed with their search.

4)  Support for more third party icons

We've updated support for more third party services on the .tel, looking at feedback from the community and actual usage of these services listed in the .tel domains.

We are still working on the final item listed in the September newsletter, the new templates and we will provide a development update in the next newsletter due out this month.

redirect 301 or 302

Originally Posted by maximka View Post

301 is a Permanent redirect and will result in the Source URL being de-indexed. Useful if you have no plans to develop the Source domain and actually want to remove any old SE listings.

302 is a Temporary redirect and will keep the Source URL still indexed. Useful if you want to develop the Source domain but are just redirecting whilst you find the time to do so.

The advantage of a 301 redirect over a 302 redirect is that the "link juice" is transferred to the Target URL, so increasing its rankings in the search engines. The advantage of a 302 redirect over a 301 is that the Source URL is not de-indexed.

As an example, I am shortly to transfer my site http://www.BoatSearchWorldwide.com to a new domain name http://www.BoatSearchEngine.com

I will use 301 Permanent redirects on all the ad pages, so that the http://UK.BoatSearchWorldwide.com/boats.asp etc. ad pages are removed from the search engines and replaced by the new http://UK.BoatSearchEngine.com/boats.asp ad pages, with the "link juice" being transferred as well.

I will use 302 Temporary redirects on my individual country home pages such as http://US.BoatSearchWorldwide.com until I am sure that the corresponding http://US.BoatSearchEngine.com etc. home pages rank about as high in the search engines - my country-based home pages bring in quite a lot of new visitors.

I will use no redirect on the overall home page http://www.BoatSearchWorldwide.com since I will have a "For Sale" sign on this page once the site transfer is completed.

3 possibilities: 301 redirect, 302 redirect or masked forwarding

Redirect the dottel

Redirect Your Defensive .Tel Domains

Defensive domain registrations can be quite "painful" to manage. If you're trying to protect your brand or identity online you can easily end up registering quite a few alternatives to your main domain. With "normal" domain names this isn't too much of an issue to manage, as you can point one domain at another, so if you go to blacknight.ie you'll end up on blacknight.com, same thing would happen with blacknight.eu or any of the other variants we've registered.

With .tel domains, however, this isn't something that either you the registrant or us the registrar could do. Not even if we'd wanted to, as the entire thing is hosted on the Telnic servers.

Now that has changed.

If you have a few defensive .tel domain name registrations you can easily point them to your main .tel domain name.

For example, we use the domain blacknight.tel and have populated it with contact details. We also have the domain blacknightdomains.tel that we got, but aren't ever going to use actively

How?

Login to the Telhosting system with your username and password.

Choose the domain you want to point at your main domain, in our case I chose blacknightdomains.tel

In order for a .tel domain name to resolve it needs to have records associated with it, so we automatically populate all .tel domain names during registration. In order to get the redirect to work you will first need to remove all the content.

So delete the "header text" and save. Then you'll need to create a link to the .tel that you want to point to.

If there are no other records or objects such as the map setup then the redirect should work.

Allow about 15 minutes or so for the changes to "kick in"

We are still working on the final item listed in the September newsletter, the new templates and we will provide a development update in the next newsletter due out this month.

?????

Aled, is this feature a 301 redirect (Permanent) or 302 redirect (Temporary).

I hope it's a 302, since a 301 redirect will result in the original .tel (if indexed by the search engines) being de-indexed - it can then be a problem in terms of timescale getting it re-indexed again when you start developing it.

Please could you confirm that the redirect being applied is a 302 (Temporary) one ?

It's a 302 redirect.

Razones para que triunfe un dominio .tel

1.) If different domains want to share data with each other automatically, the infrastructure of them must be homogeneous. .tel domains are the only ones which fulfill this requirement.

2.) If you want to navigate through domains voice-controlled (e. g. with SIRI), you can do it only with .tel domains.

3.) If I want to keep an overview about all my personal login data of all websites where I am registered, where else I can save these information beside in .tel domains?

4.) If you want to open a website, instead of typing the IP address you type the domain name.
If you want to call somebody, instead of dialing the phone number you dial the name of that person with letters in the future, too.
Since mobile phones and internet are merging, the DNS is the perfect solution for this.

5.) Facebook with all the concerns about data privacy is scary. The better social networking will work on domain base.

6.) If you want to specify which data you want to share with others, which other tool allows you to modify the sharing of your data for every single contact different beside .tel domains?

7.) Everybody has a phone number today. In the future everybody will have also a domain name, but not everybody needs a website. For these people a .tel domain is the best fit.

8.) After full introduction of IPv6 every customer will have several IP addresses for himself, for his family, for his car, for his refrigerator, for his PC, for his cell phone, for his television and so on. You have to bundle them with your .tel domain, because it could be the only switch for all of them.

9.) 7 billion people are living on this planet. Excluding commercial domains perhaps only 1 % of them own their personal domain on the internet.
If the other 99 % register their domain and only 1 % of them decide to choose a .tel domain, we have already 70 million .tel domains (almost as much as we have .com domains today).

TELcp V3.0

Hi to All,

Just to let everyone know that we have successfully completed the TELcp Ver.3 project.
We have also integrated the "Private Data" in the new version.
However, "Private Data" feature requires the tel Owner to visit CTH only to approve TelFriends requests as such facility is not available through the TelHosting Client SOAP API.

Planning to make the ver.3.0 services (for both tel Owners and tel Users on Desktop and mobile platforms) available through www.telcp.com by first week of December.

Cheers!

TEL Domain Investment Returns after 2 years 7 months and 8 days

This is my summary of TEL domain investment returns after 2 years, 7 months and 8 days of my first registration of one Dot Tel Domain. As a TEL domain owner heavy involved in various businesses in need of marketing, I have achieved pretty good results with many new people brought onto my other websites, through TEL domains.

Summary of results and success from TEL domains

This is my summary of TEL domain investment returns after 2 years, 7 months and 8 days of my first registration of one Dot Tel Domain for Thetabiz® Group. As a TEL domain owner heavy involved in various businesses in need of marketing, I have achieved some pretty good results with many new people brought onto my other websites, into my businesses and many came and are still coming through TEL domains.

Only, is that temporary success based on TEL domains?

There are some factors which in fact give to TEL domain some temporary well search engine rankings:

  1. Subdomain usage makes TEL domain URLs rank better on Google
  2. Plain TEL domains are still unique and rank well for rare terms
  3. TEL domain is global domain, and not one country oriented such as .ME

And that is about all there is to say about success from TEL domains.

You don't need to setup your own DNS server to enable numerous subdomains, thus you can easily start with a TEL domain, register a keyword for search engines, and implement easily subdomains which for that one simple and only reason of having subdomains rank better, because search engines consider words in the URL more important than words on the page. As simple as that.

TEL domains are still unique domains, you can have only one word on a TEL domain. There cannot be two TEL domains such as http://teldomaintel.tel and http://teldomaintel.tel -- there exist only one website and one TEL domain is for one keyword. If you have a rare term or rare keyword, your TEL domains will rank well. But, don't hope to see them ranking well for taken keywords. You will get only a temporary success with TEL domains. You may appear on search engines, but within few months or with the development of other websites, your TEL domains will simply disappear and you will no longer be on the first page. As simple as that.

TEL domain is a global domain, and not just a domain like .CO or .ME or .WS which all belong to various countries, such as Columbia, Montenegro or West Samoa. TEL domain is considered in search engines a global domain, such as INFO or BIZ domains.

For those simple 3 factors, TEL domain may win some hearts of TEL domain owners.

And those simple 3 factors, give the temporary success to those TEL domain owners.

Why temporary success?

TEL domain cannot expand. You have what you have. TEL domain is for contact information, and not for general information. The ugly websites forced by TELNIC onto every TEL domain owner, do not contribute to your success at all.

You will have a phone number or few, fax number, e-mail or websites on TEL domains, and maybe some informations. And that is all. There are no ways how you can write pages, blogs, calendars, websites, there is nothing like that on the TEL domain. It is not a domain which will catch users or have many visitors. TEL domains are to Veni, Vidi, Vici domains.

TEL domains are hard to update often. People try to use them just as general websites, but that was never a purpose and they shall be regarded just as landing pages, pointers to your contact information, other websites and opening times of businesses. And that's it.

TEL domain as such will have its uses throughout the future of Internet. And there may be other alternatives to come up with some bright ideas similar to TEL domains

TEL Domain SEO Myths Promoted by TELNIC

There are some serious SEO myths promoted by TELNIC, which claim some seriously tucked up stuff. Control of TEL domain, no extra SEO spending, authoritative information, no duplication, cross linking with social networks and services. Let us see what is true of that.

TELNIC blatantly claims that with TEL domain you will increase your search engine rankings.

There are five points, which TELNIC claim which may help you be found online.

Control your domain name

With TEL domain, there is little you can control. Any domain you own, you may also control, right? But what about the TEL domain? All you can control is which phone number, website or link you will put on the TEL domain. And everything else which you may control with other domains, is not possible for the TEL domain.

You may NOT control on TEL domain:
  • Web hosting account
  • Website design
  • Web directories
  • Spam protection of your e-mail address
  • Your e-mail
  • Javascript
  • Flash
  • Images
  • Numerous other uncountable features available for other domains

No extra SEO spending

This is absolutely false statement. The only purpose of such a statement is to catch attention of beginners, as everyone with knowledge of SEO will know that his may not be true. This statement says that you as TEL domain owner, you will increase your search engine rankings without extra SEO spending. SEO is by the way, Search Engine Optimization, a technique which brings you step by step on first pages of search engines, so that people may find you easier, so that you rank better.

If this would be true, you would not need anything else but TEL domain, you would increase your search engine rankings. Well, it's not that easy.

For a true visibility on search engines, you either need to be an expert or pay other experts. A simple registration of a TEL domain, may bring you temporarily on search engines, but that will not stay without either hard work or some extra money.

Authoritative information about you

Although TELNIC claims that TEL domain is all about authoritative information about you, there is zero of truth in this statement. In fact, contrary is true, numerous TEL domains carry non-authoritative information about you and many companies find their information on TEL domains without giving any authority nor without having a control over publishing such an information.

Facebook is more authoritative than a TEL domain, because they take quick measures to delete duplicate Facebook accounts, Facebook accounts representing businesses and such. You have to use your real name on Facebook, although for them that is a hard task to manage.

The problem lies in the fact that TELNIC cannot control nor know, nor take away rights to TEL domain owners, to publish whatever they want on their TEL domains. One of terms in the Terms and Conditions is that you will publish your contact information and in case of third parties, that you will have explicit permission from those third parties. This yet, does not make a TEL domain authoritative information about you, as there is no way to know who has really put that information on a TEL domain. TEL domain makes it even worse, the registration may be anonymous, and one may publish on TEL domain various non-authoritative information thus getting input from clients thinking you are one person or company, while you may be yet another scumbag walking around, stealing someone's money.

No duplication with other web resources

This is as false as it may be. TEL domain is made for duplication. You don't even need to open a browser to have the information stored in TEL domain servers. And everyone may install a website with a proxy, which duplicates ALL TEL domains just as easy as it can be. If one have domain http://boracay.tel this directory made on the TEL domain is universally accessible, and you may show all the information on any other domain. Such as http://boracay.tel-4.com and if you look carefully, the domain in question here is not .TEL domain but .COM domain http://tel-4.com, demonstration set to show how silly is the idea of TEL domain. You can take any TEL domain and append our COM domain to have it appear on a totally different website with a totally different and maybe even better template.

Well now, they have built whole directory on http://boracay.tel and now someone comes, does not even copy anything from that website, but from simple access to DNS servers, and all the information is shown on http://boracay.tel-4.com

So much about "no duplication with other web resources".

Cross-linking with social networks & services

This TELNIC statement looks like a magical benefit which you may get when you purchase TEL domain. Nothing is but far from truth. You can put links on your TEL domain and link to Facebook, Twitter and such. Nothing prevents you. But that does not make TEL domain special at all. You can put links on any websites and on any other domain on Internet. Internet is hyper-linked, that is main feature. We may link to anyone we want.

But what you cannot do, you cannot link on TEL domain to Flickr, Photobucket pictures, you cannot link to Flash content, images and all the other stuff which you may find.

Myths presented by TELNIC are blatant lies. They did not improve their false and blatant lies from their website since 2 years. And more and more websites are coming out which points to degradation of Internet created by TELNIC.

I am expert in search engine rankings, and I have to work very hard to bring up various businesses. And as owner of 150+ TEL domains, I certainly know what I do.

But will you know that?

Bid per call

Bid per call
Hi guys there you go.
Another way to make extra money thorugh new google voice look at this post BID PER CALL:

Google Ads Driving Millions of Calls per Month
Posted by Gretchen Nemechek on Mon, Oct 31, 2011
Email Article inShare.2
Over the past year Google has been phasing in functionality to enable advertisers to drive more phone calls to their businesses. In 2010, Google Affiliate Network partnered with RingRevenue to power their pay-per-call program allowing advertisers to create call-based campaigns for publishers/affiliates to promote and earn commissions. In November 2010 Google announced click-to-call for mobile and with the success of call-based campaigns in the various channels, bid-per-call is a natural next step.

Last week, Google announced they will be rolling out "bid-per-call" functionality for Adwords customers in the US and UK. Bid-per-call essentially gives Adwords advertisers the ability to place keyword bids for phone calls initiated from Google Voice generated call tracking numbers placed in the ad copy. Advertisers will be able to indicate a max cost-per-phone-call (CPP). The bids will be set at the ad group level. According to Google ad groups will need to meet minimum click and call thresholds to qualify, and advertisers will also need to be using Call Extensions and Call Metrics to enable bid-per-call. Bid-per-call will only be available for ads appearing on desktop/laptops and tablets. For now mobile ads will continue to use the click-to-call feature which charges per click.

According to Google, 15% of all searches now take place on mobile and at least 40% of those carry local intent. Consumers are starting to connect more directly to advertisers via their mobile phones and Google is betting that trend will carry to their laptops and tablets with more than 20% of desktop and tablet based searches carrying local intent.

Last month we shared the results of search marketer, imwave, inc. improving click-through rates by 250% after including phone numbers in their search ads. In the past, Google reported click-throughs on mobile improve between 5-30% when phone numbers are included. With more than half a million advertisers using their click-to-call functionality for mobile, it is no surprise that Google is looking for ways to help advertisers drive more calls from desktop ads. They are already seeing more than a million calls per month being driven from click-to-call.

Google's getting behind calls is good news for advertisers, as it is now even easier for advertisers looking to get started with call-based campaigns to jump in and get started with solutions like pay-per-call. Over the course of this year, we've seen tremendous growth in our business and in the call-based advertising space. And for advertisers looking to do more than just track calls from search, call performance marketing offers a way to manage call-based campaigns from all of their offline, online and mobile marketing initatives.

Many verticals such as insurance, financial services, home services, higher education and high-end retail, are seeing great results with call-to-conversion rates between 30-50% and average phone order values 1.5-2x online orders. Pay-per-call has driven millions in new revenue for advertisers and millions in commissions for publishers. For advertisers that want more calls to their business there is no barrier to entry. It is simple and easy to get started.

Does you business value phone calls? How are you driving more to your business?

Net-link

SERPS Position 1 contains phone number ?
If you are going to do Call By Voice, assuming you can get Apple to send the command to your software application, it seems unlikely that you will be able to just do a lookup based on that person's name and adding ".tel", since that will not always give you the site/page with their phone number on.

Some are approaching this by once they have got the name doing a search on Google and then picking up the phone details from SERPS Position 1.

If this approach is followed .tel has an inbuilt advantage since it's phone numbers are held in a structured way on the page, unlike other TLDs.

Just tried out some "phone firstname lastname" searches (without the quotes) on my own .tel search engine http://www.net-link.com/tel to see if the first result (P1) that comes up contains that person's phone number.

Here are the results (in alphabetical order):

phone christopher vanderhorst - P1 http://personal.van.tel contains phone number

phone justin hayward - P1 http://justin.tel contains phone number

phone mark kolb - P1 http://mark-kolb.corporate.kprobe.tel contains phone number

phone mike seaton - P1 http://mikeseaton.tel contains phone number

So a small sample, but all returned P1 of SERPS with the phone number in, even though 2 of 4 did not have a phone number listed in the home page.

Check out your own .tel at http://www.net-link.com/tel and see if your .tel page containing your phone number comes up at SERPS P1 for "phone firstname lastname" (without the quotes) - it looks like this could be a prerequisite for Call By Voice working OK for you !

SIRI with the domain .tel

obviously, "call/email/skype somebody.tel" is the ultimate SIRI application.
As soon as Apple opens up SIRI to 3rd parties via APIs the first thing I'll do is make such an interface.

But Apple didn't open SIRI up yet.
So I'm not going to waste my time talking about it until it's available

Just found the site I was thinking of - http://www.dnsaleprice.com - you just need to remove the words "domain names" from Keywords and select the .tel extension from TLD.

The last 2 sales shown are http://Visit.tel (January 2011) and http://MNet.tel (June 2011) at 1,000 USD each.

The highest value sale so far is http://TelChina.tel (September 2010) at 4,992 USD.

Aussies first inside Siri's head

INSIDE SIRI'S HEAD: A Sydney app developer has become the first in the world to figure out how to get Siri to work outside of Apple's own apps.

Relevant offers

A Sydney app developer has become the first in the world to figure out how to get Siri to work outside of Apple's own apps.

Separately, Google's mobile boss has dimissed Siri at a conference, arguing he does not believe phones should be our personal assistants. This contradicts previous statements by Google engineers.

The Siri voice recognition/artifical intelligence technology, introduced with the iPhone 4S, has been tipped torevolutionise the way we interact with our portable devices, just like the iPhone did when it was first introduced. But so far Siri only works with Apple's own built-in apps, and Apple has yet to release a roadmap for opening it up to third-party developers.

Remember The Milk, a task manager app for the iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, is a natural fit for Siri. It is used to create tasks, appointments and reminders, among other features, and adding such information to the phone is much more efficient when done using voice rather than manual touchscreen input.

''It's just a really great way to do it - you're waiting around and you just remember something and you talk to your phone and it remembers it,'' said co-founder Omar Kilani.

''The difficulty was just trying to figure out what exactly was required on our end to do it, and how to configure the system so Siri will let you add directly into that list. It's not obvious stuff.''

Kilani said his team didn't have to hack or jailbreak the phone, and instead figured out how to interact with Siri by capturing network traffic. ''Basically it's just trying to figure out how it was working with the iCloud stuff and then doing it on our end,'' he said.

He said he had yet to receive a complaint from Apple but he hoped the company wouldn't mind him taking advantage of Siri before it was ready. Apple Australia declined to comment.

''I think everyone wants it to open up [to third-party developers] but I think the issue is it's actually a really hard problem to solve ... what if you  have two apps that do the same thing and they want to register for the same action word? How does that work?,'' said Kilani.

''I think they probably will at some stage but they have to figure out a way for third parties to actually be able to do it in an Apple-like way.''

Strangely, despite Google's early development of voice recognition software for Android, its senior vice president of mobile, Andy Rubin, thinks it is a little weird for people to be talking to their phone.

''I don't believe your phone should be an assistant ... you shouldn't be communicating with the phone,'' he said, adding ''we'll see how pervasive it gets''.

Kilani started Remember The Milk with Emily Boyd in 2004 and they launched their first app in 2005. Kilani said the pair are now married after developing a romance while running the company.

They've never had any investment funding and now employ about 10 people using revenue generated by people who pay a small yearly fee to get the premium version of the app.
