The subdomain "hideout" in "mytown.tel" is one of them. hideout.mytown.tel was created as a hidden subdomain. All other sub domains in mytown.tel except "hideout" have direct links to hidden sub domains from a different sub domain of mytown.tel. The examples below explains this better: 1) "natglobal" The sub domain "natglobal" is a hidden sub domain of "mytown.tel". But the linking is provided from atms.mytown.tel (where "atm" is a DISPLAYED subdomain of "mytown.tel"). Therefore, search engine indexing of natglobal is done via atms.mytown.tel. You can find "natglobal" either by navigating through atms.mytown.tel or just typing "natglobal" in the search box of mytown.tel (or telpages.com). 2) "hideout" The sub domain "hideout" is a hidden sub domain of "mytown.tel". There is NO linking to the page "hideout.mytown.tel" provided from mytown.tel or any of its subdomains (hidden or DISPLAYED). Then we created a link to "hideout.mytown.tel" from "demo.telcp.tel" where "demo" is a DISPLAYED sub domain of telcp.tel. The "hideout.mytown.tel" is now indexed through "demo.telcp.tel" and is available for searching at the search box of "mytown.tel". Our experiment is successful. Now what do you achieve by doing this? Well, our aim is to create a ROOT page of "mydomain.tel" without any links to its own subdomains. Something like telnames.tel landing page Then create links to its sub domains from another tel domain. This method creates "neat & tidy" landing pages for tel domains which may be having too many sub domains you can not DISPLAY on a single page. Or an ideal visitor card for "sub.mydomain.tel"; sub@mydomain.tel. And also make life easier for crawlers of telpages.com. 3) How to Search Type keyword "hideout" in search box at mytown.tel OR type keywords "hideout mytown" in search box at telpages.com. i think he's saying he has accomplished something similar to what dialaroom did with no links on the homepage but using the search to find the correct subdomain. the experiment simply proved that if you link to a subdomain from another .tel domain then it does get indexed so no need to link from the root node on the same domain in order to get it indexed. a diagram always helps though

"hideout mytown" has now been indexed by Google as well. Try search "hideout mytown" with or without inverted commas. But if you remove all the naptr info, then when it gets re-indexed it will then be removed from Telpages results. 1. So once it's indexed it will ALWAYS be indexed. 2. But, you can suppress it from ever being found in a. .tel search box, or Telpages, by deleting all naptr data. That it?

A page once indexed will always be indexed again irrespective of the original path it was found, as long as the indexed page maintains at least one NAPTR. To clarify the process with regards to a registrar setting up a .tel account for a name that has previously expired/been transferred:

The registrar has two tasks when setting up a .tel in their partition:
a. Creating the account in their partition (including setting the username and password)
b. Setting up the domain and zone so that the .tel name points to that specific account.

Having these as separate steps allows the registrar to prepopulate the .tel if they wish to do so (as many do). It also minimises any downtime for the domain in the case of a transfer since the account can be set up before the transfer even completes.

As a domain can only have one zone, on launch of .tel we advised all registrars that they should delete the zone in their partition should a name be deleted, expired or transferred to another registrar. It soon became clear that this wasn’t happening and as a result “new” registrars were having an issue creating the zone as the “old” zone still existed. To circumvent this issue we updated the “CreateZone” command used by the registrars two years ago, so that an additional parameter could be used to force creation of the zone even in the event of another zone already existing. All registrars were notified of this update and how it could help them in the zone creation process, especially in the case of transfers and registration of recently expired names. A reminder was also sent to registrars a few months later.

The zone creation command can only succeed if the registrar making the request matches the sponsoring registrar for the name. It seems that some commands are failing this requirement for one of two reasons:

1. The registrar company has a number of different registrar accounts which they use and they are making the request from a different account to the one actually used to register the name. I see that some registrars (e.g. Name.com) are using different registrar accounts for drop catching. The command must be issued from the registrar account to which the name was registered.
2. The command is made before the WHOIS has been updated to show the “new” registrar. It is possible that the issues some of you are experiencing are the result of “drop-catches” whereby the command is being made before the WHOIS has updated and is failing as a result. Reissuing the command (with the correct parameter for forcing creation of the zone) once the WHOIS is updated will ensure that the zone is correctly created and pointing to the “new” partition.

Registrars also have the ability to manually create zones using their partition control panel. Creating zones in this way also deletes the “old” zone so that setup is complete.

As mentioned, all registrars have been sent this information, and I also remind them of the steps required to make this a smooth process whenever I contact them regarding this issue. That is actually all I can do in this process. Names which have an issue which is then resolved, is resolved either by the registrar reissuing the create zone command correctly or manually creating the zone.

The error message given above regarding the 5 nameservers being blocked means that the create zone command has failed either:
1. Because the “old” zone still exists and the additional API parameter has not been used OR
2. The command was issued from the incorrect registrar CTH account OR
3. The command was issued before the registrar became the sponsoring registrar in the WHOIS

The situation where a user registers a name but when it is activated still shows the previous owner’s details is the result of the “old” zone still being active and the registrar not yet having created the new zone correctly.

I apologise if this is overly technical for many, but with “fingers being pointed” at Telnic as stated above, I thought it was important that the process is explained fully.

There is no restriction to the number of sub domains if you can have your own hosting service for your tel domains. There is NO limit as such. Then you will be able to provide a page each for all Smiths in the U.S. If that many people are interested getting a page like that, then we will definitely start our own tel domain hosting business. But first we must see if we can get 3->30->300->3000 then beyond 3000 (we have discussed this before, I think about 2 years ago). 2 years ago the technology was different and in 2 years from now different again, very much improved.

Beyond 3000 will be the proper tel directory service.

P.S. And when there is a search engine like telpages.com, people would not bother where the page is coming from. Who cares if it is a sub domain or a single page tel domain or the colour of the background. All they need from a tel directory is contact information.

Totally agree. Directory owners have to think differently. If you are building huge networks of subdomains, then each subdomain should be used to sell a .tel and then link to it. Use that platform as your vehicle for YOU to sell more .tel domains. Don't sell subdomains as THE master addreses. You can make money by selling actual domains and then provide optional services to populate them on behalf of the new owners. Sell advertising on subdomains or provide links to .tel domains.

I have thought about this and I have been down this road too for all kinds of directories.

I've collected a small set of surnames thinking that using them will provide benefit to those who want a lastname identity. Instead give them a free spot to hold MINIMAL information with a link to their full .tel. Either could be used. The benefit to the owner is they get to reserve the subdomain as a placeholder and you can sell up to 100 .tel domains per subdomain (eg 100 John.Smith.tel links in that subdomain - more John's will benefit, instead of just one). The free link gives them a little extra juice, but the sale of the .tel and the service afterwards might be the ticket.

The same holds true for other kinds of directories. Give business owners links from your categorized subdomains to their business .TELs. This holds even more promise since a business requires much more content. Provide a service that builds the content on behalf of the new owner. Here's my service (a start) for those SMB's I sell.

Creating massive directories of names etc will not benefit this TLD or Telnic. Telnic needs us to sell INDIVIDUAL .tel domains and with our growing assets we can help sell more to make the public aware. Use our assets to market and create awareness, not to stockpile. Give people links from your assets to newly sold domains. Share and open your assets. IMO, this is what will help expand awareness.

Great article Mark, and a very good topic for discussion.

Two things could end up coming out of this I would say:

1. The additional tld onlslaught strengthens the position of the original tlds (.com, .net, .org) as the other 1,200 tld's did.
2. Being that many of these "new" tld's coming out are not "structural" in nature, they could break the "original mold" once and for all ( .tel should hope for 2. greatly. )

"structural" is used to refer to a "categorical" (.edu) need versus "anything" (.goop) people might want.

We currently have .com to .xxx and .uk to .(idn), but truly commercial names could break the mold once and for all, just as this entire process with ICANN was intended to do.

Suddenly .com, .net, .org doesn't mean anything if the big players abandon the "originals" for their own tld !

".com and the orginals" will then no longer be the "master address tld of choice", and the only REAL tld designed as a master address and master directory across all devices (.tel and telpages) has that much more of a reason to prevail in the ensuing chaos.

.TEL is truly the original of "master addresses" with it's own "master directory" because of its limited page structure and directory exclusivity. ( aka its "purpose" by ICANN )

The first commercial search engines all included .com, .net, .org, and created confusion, which exists even today - and now it will be times thousands more tld's !

What we finally have coming to fruition could be the statements made about the "cart and the horse" and the "truck and the trailer" with .tel years ago .. >> here <<

.TEL and TELPAGES is the "horse" that finally has the ability to pull the "cart of other .tld's around".

Another analogy used is that .TEL is the "Card Catalog" for the "Internet Library".

Any way you look at it, .TEL has the opportunity to lead the way as the starting point in the chaos if 2. above is correct. Yellow/White Pages is/was the way out of chaos for local, Facebook is the popular way out today for people and businesses, and now maybe TelPages and .TEL pages can capitalize on the way of the future, and the ALL-TIME original in its class with the respect it deserves.




added: The "single page" structure and the "front page only" structure with the original style is critical for .TEL and TelPages success ultimately. The subdomains and long-tail benefits indexed in Google or whoever was only a sideline or secondary benefit all along, even if key.

They all know they can use Google, and get search results from any business that has put the same search terms on their site. Decide whether you want to make your money from paid subscription or, from ppc advertising. There is scope to introduce affiliate links for items which are not locally available.

Simple scroll to connect, backed up by TelPages keyword search is the point to push. Save the site to favourites (and mobile homepage if the phone can do that), and the customer can forget about search engines and results dictated by paid promotion.

London-based Telnic is carving out an interesting role for itself as an online enabler of small businesses. Telnic is the organization that offers the .tel top level domain, which for GBP 14.95 per year provides a simple Web presence that enables individuals and businesses to store all their contact information (email, Web address, social presence) in a single, searchable profile.

The company has developed this into an online presence product (branded Telnames) that is optimized for smartphones and is targeting (among others) the small-office, home office business.

Imagine the office manager by day, licensed hypnotherapist by evening and weekend, and there lies the SoHo opportunity. There are millions of these micro businesses around the world and they share some common traits. Most have only a crude Web presence, which is likely not mobile optimized. Bowen-Morris said he is in discussions with directory publishers in the U.K., and elsewhere, about using the Telnic API to build a custom branded environment for offering .tel as part of a presence bundle, or as part of a managed service, which could command a much higher price point for resellers. Through the API, publishers can register the .tel names and upload merchant business profile info. Bowen-Morris says next on the list for Telnic are apps that allow registry and management of .tel names via iPhone or Android.

With regards to 7seas.mytown.tel, the folder "7seas" is created as a hidden folder in the ROOT. But it is a linked "folder".

hideout.mytown is also a hidden folder in the ROOT but not linked.
In fact, the link to the folder "hideout" is provided from a secondary tel domain which is visited regularly by major search engines. Well, for the time being stick to the directory structure similar to what we tried to explain from time to time on this forum referring to mytown.tel. Folders should be built in the ROOT directory as hidden folders. Create separate CTH accounts for each tel domain.

We are not going elaborate too much at this time but one may study how the hideout.mytown.tel is structured with best SEO. The page was indexed by telpages.com in 3 days and other major search engines picked it up in 5-6 days.

I was browsing the web when I came up on a site that was selling the .tel domain name. At first, I was skeptical on the benefits of having a .tel address, but the more I thought about it, it made sense to me. The whole purpose of the the .tel address is that it provides you with a online directory reference that is sorta cheap(Depending on domain registrar)

The reason that it makes sense to me is that it provides you with a simple way to give out your information about you. Unlike a regular website, you could only put basic directory information. Now that is not bad if you think about it. Lets say that you want to show a client multiple sites that you created, many people  would get annoyed by telling them to go to multiple sites. Instead you just give them one link with all the information that you want them to know. This is important because lets say if you give them a test/blog site like this one where you are constantly changing things in order to test out new technologies, well this can prove to be disastrous if you break the site like I do on a weekly basis. With the .tel you are limited with what you can do since it is meant to serve as a directory. But this is good because like that you only have to give them one site and it will have all the info that you would want to give them. This includes social media addresses, websites, phone numbers, location information, and a short summary about yourself or what it is for.

 

For example in this picture, it is the directory for mesa community college, it shows there information on how to contact them. now lets say that you are a city or any other person or business, what you can do it put the contact  information that you see valuable. this way if you have multiple web site addresses or telephone numbers that you want to make public, now you can give the people a easy way of finding the information that you want them to find without the hassle of having an automated system tell them press 1, press two. This way they can find what they need fast. This is the only reason I find it useful.

I personally have put the .tel address on my business cards. That way if they want other sites or phone numbers about me, they can just go to one simple site and find anything they want about me with less hassle. For businesses purposes,  it think that it is a great idea.

If you go to name.com, you can get one right now for 10 bucks. network solutions currently wants 50 for it. For ten bucks it is not that bad for a simple SEO boost.

Heck many people get a regular site just for the purpose of putting their basic info online. This can be a cheaper alternative if your whole purpose is just to put your info online.
