Although TelDial currently only handles phone numbers and email addresses in the specified single domain (eg http://domains123.teldial.com) or subdomain (eg http://corporate.kprobe.teldial.com) it is planned to offer in the future:
- Other contact mediums such as Skype.
- The ability to specify your contact details are held in a subdoman of the same domain (so teldialing a domain would pick up the details from a subdomain).
- The ability to specify your contact details are held in another domain or subdomain entirely - useful when you are selling domains and want to list contact details in a central domain.
But first I must test TelDial thoroughly and am looking for testers to try it out on their mobile phones.
What I need is to be certain I can detect a mobile phone browser and so would ask you to post here which of the following tests have worked OK:
a) Key in http://telnic.teldial.com on your mobile phone - does the Mobile Phone Browser Detected message say YES or NO ?
b) Does clicking the "Phone" button take you to your call screen for +442074676450 ?
c) Does clicking the "Email" button take you to your create email message screen for customerservice@telnic.org ?

.tel Mapping Tool
July 15th, 2011You might have already seen the, which allow you to very easily embed .tel information on your website.
A couple of weeks ago a significant update was made to the .tel Mapping Tool, which displays .tel domains, subdomains and related domains on a map in a very easy but modular way.
The previous version of the mapping tool allowed you to visualize a domain's info in the "bubble" window in a single way:
But now with the latest update you can pass in a format for the bubble by using the parameter "info=". The value of that parameter is a javascript snippet. The easiest explanation is through an example:
'<div><span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px;">' + r['logo'] + '</span><span>' + r['dds'] + '<br /><a href="http://' + domain + '" target="_blank">' + idndomain + '</a><br /><br />' + r['firstnaptr'] + '</span></div>'
The above gives the default bubble with the image on the left, and on the right the domain and the first contact record below it.
If you want to change it, note that this is a javascript string concatenation. It's pretty clear what the params are:
- domain : the punycode domain
- idndomain : the unicode IDN domain (what you want to show to users)
- r : the result from the domain lookup, which has 'logo', 'dds' and 'firstnaptr', respectively the logo image, the title of your domain (dds), and the first naptr. All of those are actual html snippets.
If you want to pass in the 'info=' parameter using GET, you must escape the whole thing. And don't forget to put single quotes at start and finish, like the example above.
If you use POST, you're good to go.
Note that you can completely screw up the page if you pass in a broken javascript string, as it'll break the whole javascript code on the page. You've been warned: with great power comes great responsibility…
The .tel Mapping tool also now supports all .tel IDN domain types (such as chinese character domains).
Should you want more detail on how to use the .tel Mapping Tool, please see the "Tools for Website Integrationl page.

Dominios .tel y las comunicaciones
Give customers lowest-cost connections, Telnic urges mobile operators
| By Nick Wood , Total Telecom, in Singapore Wednesday 22 June 2011 | |
'Longest start-up in history' taps DNS to take complexity out of managing contact information.
| U.K.-based online registry owner Telnic, which licenses the .tel top level domain (TLD) from ICANN, this week said one of its long-term ambitions is to enable mobile operators to connect their customers via the cheapest possible method available, whether that be VoIP, SMS, or a standard voice call. "Imagine how you would feel as a customer if your mobile operator knew that you and the person you were trying to contact both had Skype accounts, and suggested that you initiate a Skype-to-Skype call as the lowest-cost way of connecting," said Justin Hayward, business development director at Telnic. "It would make services a lot stickier, and build a lot of loyalty." The realisation of that concept might not be that far off. Telnic offers a service that enables users to register their own .tel URL for $10 per year and, using a simple browser-based back end, store and manage up to 300,000 pieces of contact information, including phone numbers, social networking profiles, and email addresses. It also allows users to set up and switch between a number of different profiles, allowing them to quickly adjust their viewable contact information should their location or preferences change. Their location can also be stored via an integrated Google Maps widget. The whole service does not use any proprietary software or standards, and because it is entirely Web-based it does not require mobile users to import their contact information onto their handset, and therefore it can be accessed via any connected device with a browser. "We are moving towards enabling people to dial a name and not a number," said Hayward. "The ultimate goal is to enable phones to dial a .tel [address] and offer customers a choice of how to connect to someone." Telnic was formed in 2000, but did not sell its first .tel address until December 2008. "It took six-and-a-half years to get the domain name licence from ICANN," said Hayward. "We've been described as the longest start-up in history." It now has around 300,000 .tel addresses registered in 16 different languages, spread across 191 countries. Hayward said Telnic is not attempting to replace traditional Websites, but aims to make it simpler for people to establish their own online presence without the need to sign up to a social network. "There are 220 million registered domains in a world with six billion people," he said. "There has got to be something stopping them [from registering] – cost and technological knowledge." |

You can start building your geo directory with a limit of approximately 2975 premium tel pages (leaving 25 tel pages for categories) based on the Telnic's limit on sub domains (which is 3000 at present).
Following is an example how to build a .tel directory with 5 categories (you can increase this according to your needs)
Step 1 -
Create a directory tree with 5 categories as follows:
bakeries.mytown.tel
boutiques.mytown.tel
caterers.mytown.tel
dentists.mytown.tel
groceries.mytown.tel
- these are the "links to folders" going to be visible on main page -
note: It's better not to have too many categories on the main page, 25-30 is advisable (again its up to you anyway).
Step 2 -
Then keep on adding anything (names of business/shop etc) you want as follows:
(IMPORTANT! When you use the CTH to create folders, there is checkbox labeled "Create a link to this folder". If you check this the folder you create will be visible on the telpage. But, remember that you cannot reverse this using the CTH. However, you can hide or display this newly created folder by using TELcp at www.telcp.com.)
bakery.mytown.tel - (to be listed under the premium name for category "bakeries")
greengrocery.mytown.tel - (to be listed under catergory "groceries")
thedentist.mytown.tel - (to be listed under catergory "dentists")
doughnuts.mytown.tel - (to be listed under category "bakeries")
partysupply.mytown.tel - (to be listed under category "caterers")
partydresses.mytown.tel - (to be listed under category "boutiques")
- you can create up to about 2975 sub domains like this -
note: This way you can have a nice n short address for your .tel page, And its the one that .tel page user will display on the namecard/bizcard or in the letterhead. Easy to remember. Biz name + Name of city+town+village .tel.
note2: If you do not wish to use the services of TELcp at www.telcp.com, then you must note down the list of sub domains and their URLs. And make sure that you leave the checkbox labelled "Create a link to this folder" blank.
Step 3 -
Now you must select the telpages you created under Step 2 and add tem as "Contact Information" under the categories you have created under Step 1.
note: Once again remember there is limit for the number of records per page (which is 100 and it includes images, text ads etc).
Step 4 -
Now, if you use TELcp at www.telcp.com, select the root domain and "Hide Folder Link"" by selecting "Manage Folder Links" on the popup menu.
If you followed note2 of Step 2 (that means you are not using TELcp), you do not have to do anything because those folder links are not visible from the right beginning.
- That's it.
The idea is to provide each telpage user a unique identity in their own city/town/village.
You can start this type of a geo directory small and grow gradually. Even if you charge US$5 a page you will get 5x2975. But this will not happen by magic.
"Check here if the city/town/village you live is still available. If available register it now, before its too late !"
- Cheers!
P.S. "this space will be replaced with a sample .tel domain to explain the above directory structure - hopefully after the weekend".

Dominios .tel y los móviles
Mobile in Local Search: YP app v Mobile Web, Google Mobilize, and where .tel fits in.
Yesterday, a senior exec. at my previous client when I was consulting, a major Yellow Pages (YP) publisher, called me for my thoughts on YP app v mobile web, what I thought of Google's new SMB landing page, Google Mobilise, and where did .tel fit in.
They have a neat app, great, but mobile web is increasingly where the action is – users can be lazy – when they have an urgent need for local, they grab their smartphones and tap in what and where into their browser – who leaves their web browser to open up the YP app to find a taxi? Downloads are one thing, continuous front of mind usage frequency is quite another. Both bases need to be covered. The Google mobilize product, a basic landing page is free and is based on a sub domain: https://sites.google.com/site/[your business name]. This is one approach for YP companies, either re-purposing their customer sites for mobile web, or even partnering with Google.
An interesting and simpler alternative would be to offer their customers YP branded .tels: yourbusiness.tel. These are very smart mobile landing pages based on award winning technology that utilizes the internet DNS in a clever way to store customer contact data and business profile information. The key benefits are cost and speed to market. With .tel there is no product development required and no operational costs e.g. design and hosting. This means that even if publishers include .tel packaged in their offering for free, they retain ownership of the customer and his unique top level domain with the YP companies look and feel and brand logo. This means users and advertisers recognise it as their value proposition, and at typically 1% ARPA, it's an extremely low cost solution.
The battle for the mobile internet is really shaping up – it's not about the app, it's about being in lots of places at once, especially mobile web. Wherever users search for local information, publishers need their brands to be uppermost in their minds.
At the end of the call she said to me "Thanks for confirming my thinking, what would it take to get all my print customers up live with a .tel so I can announce that we've led the entire customer base deeper into new media?" I replied, we as the global .tel registry are ready and willing to support any partner wishing to move fast in that direction. Our joint kick off operational planning meeting starts Monday and we expect to be registering names within a few weeks.
Ian Bowen-Morris, CMO, Telnic, the .tel registry.
