Click to call en los dominios .tel

Mobile Insights: Click-to-call proves a valuable addition to the advertising mix

Here's the second post in our Mobile Insights series, featuring expert views from members of our mobile ads business. Welcome this week's guest contributor, Anjali Vaidya, an Account Manager on the mobile ads team who shares her experiences on our Click-to-call (CTC) offering in mobile ads.

We're continually making enhancements to the Click-to-call ad format. Launched in early 2010, CTC allows mobile consumers searching Google or visiting sites in the Google Display Network, to click on the phone number and speak to someone who can explain more about the product or service.

One enhancement was our Call-only format to allow advertisers to receive only calls, instead of clicks, to their website. Starting this week, we're making the Call-only format even better by including a phone icon and moving the phone number above the ad.

The convenience and immediacy of CTC for users has made it one of Google's fastest-growing advertising solutions. Click-to-call is a great addition to the advertising mix. You can still drive searchers to your website, but it gives you other advantages:
  • it's a great option if you don't yet have a mobile-optimized website;
  • it captures consumers who are ready to act;
  • it allows you to drive traffic to a strong call center, giving you a competitive edge over other online advertisers.
We're generating millions of calls every month on mobile devices and the number of advertisers using phone extensions is growing quickly. The uptake for CTC is fast because advertisers are realizing great returns.
  • Home security provider Defender Direct gets 75-80% of online advertising clicks using Click-to-call. Four out of their top 10 campaigns in terms of clicks are now mobile. And the calling customers  are ready to consult with an expert about the ins and outs of alarm systems. Once the company started targeting high-end smartphones, their returns from mobile ads and CTC skyrocketed. Results were soon double what they got from desktop search. Today, Google mobile ads constitute 24% of the company's overall online budget.
  • When auto insurance company Esurance started using mobile ads and CTC they found that they could acquire customers at 20-30% less cost compared with other channels. Esurance wanted to put interested people in touch with agents or claims representative in a few simple steps. Reaching the company is faster and easier for customers, and a less expensive way to acquire leads for Esurance. Calls coming from CTC mobile ads are more likely to result in sales.
  • The Carphone Warehouse has had great success with mobile ads CTC too. The UK mobile phone retailer created a mobile website where visitors can search for headset details and price plans. They used Mobile Ad Sitelinks to provide deep links into the site and incorporated CTC in ads to allow users to reach a call center agent to get advice or buy.
Our advice? Test Click-to-call, whether you're a national or local business, to see how it can generate sales. Our customers have shown us that mobile searchers will research your products on their phones, and they appreciate the convenience of calling from that same device. Once they call, they are even closer to purchase. Your best leads are only a phone call away, try Click-to-call today!

Pay Per Call en los dominios .tel

Mobile Pay Per Call and Click to Call Advertising

Earlier this year Google launched pay per call advertising on mobile and the mobile ad network admob (now owned by Google) has been offering it as an option since 2008.

However, to date, Pay Per Call mobile has not really taken off.  Many advertisers complained of a very low ratio between clicks on the call link and actual calls completed.  Many handsets also did not support click to call ads and even if they did, consumers were very wary.  Also the type of advertisers who might use pay per call were not really ready to use mobile as a channel – in many cases local businesses are only just getting to grips with the internet, let alone mobile internet, whilst other potential advertisers had not yet emerged.

This is now changing as the market for mobile advertising becomes more mature and sophisticated.  Firstly, advertisers in pay per performance that use lead generation models involving the telephone such as insurance, debt consolidation, utilities, pay TV and so on are beginning to look to mobile as other channels become saturated.  For example, the mobile affiliate network mobpartner has recently started to offer pay per call programs such as an offer from the Polish subsidiary of the multinational, blue-chip Financial Services company Aviva.  The aim of the campaign is to promote cheap automotive insurance and it pays $2.1 per lead – not bad for Polish traffic if you can get it to convert.

The question is – can these type of offers convert well on mobile?  The key as always is getting the right traffic – and targeting very carefully according to handset, operator, geography and so on (see our previous posts on using admob PPC for CPA offers).   In any case, for those that can get it right, mobile pay per call looks like it could be a very lucrative area of the market and we'll be telling you all about it here on mobyaffiliates.

The integration economy

Google strikes back

Facebook and Twitter have become powerful marketing tools for many brands. But where there are tremendous opportunities, there can also be serious risks.

I've watched with fascination as an increasing number of companies invest in social media marketing without pausing to think through the outcomes of this approach. This post reviews four good reasons why you should pause for thought as you embark on your own social strategy.

Take, for example, the fact that more and more Fortune 500 companies are closing their television and display adverts with a call-to-action sending users to the brand's Facebook page with no mention of their own company site: "Check us out on Facebook" or "Follow us on Twitter".

You've seen this, done this or recommended your clients do it. And it is a huge coup for both of these companies. Getting other firms to pay billions of dollars a year to build your brand is an amazing feat.

When I first saw this, I thought this had to be a mistake. How in the world would companies of this size feel comfortable doing this? This was an obvious sign to me that the market still requires much education about the opportunity with social media.

While everyone jockeys for budgets to maximise their social media potential, I thought it would be a perfect time to pose the question:

What are the reasons you DON'T need a social media strategy?

ROI is hard to quantify

We're all in business to sell products or services. Are there consumer brands out there that can conclusively state that they've seen an uplift in their overall sales (besides Zynga) because they created a Facebook page?

So let's take a step back and put it this way. When you do create a brand page and people visit or become your fans, what happens next? For the most part, the answer is "nothing." Once you have X number of fans, it's really just an ego number, with limited sales to show for it.

Your brand is out of your control

Brand protection is one of the biggest challenges with blind ad networks. How do I know my brand isn't showing up next to some horrible contextual ad alongside negative publicity about my company?

Simply put, how do I know my brand isn't being associated with porn, drugs, etc.? The answer with blind networks is you really don't. We've all seen examples of adverts gone wrong on the FAIL blog.

On Facebook, the relevant question that needs to be posed is "how do I know my brand isn't being shown next to some kid's drunk snaps from the night before?" Some may say there's no such thing as bad publicity, but I'd bet many brand managers (and lawyers) would argue otherwise.

You're handing over your hard-earned customer data and relationships

I find it amazing that companies give away the opportunity to own their 1:1 customer relationships. While intentions might be good, most brands don't realise they're spending money to build Facebook's customer database instead of their own.

A good analogy would be the difference between paying rent on a real estate property (paying for someone else's ownership), versus paying your own mortgage for a long-term investment.

Not only are these companies building someone else's customer database, but they're also missing out on the opportunity to leverage valuable analytics and insights from repeat, loyal customers.

For instance, when consumers return to your site, what specific products or keywords are they searching for, or what coupons are consumers most interested in? Do you think social media sites will give you that type of data? Also, would you be frustrated if these sites used consumer data from your brand page to targets competitive ads to your customers? Just ponder that for a minute.

You can't protect your users' privacy

User privacy can't be overlooked. One of the comments from Facebook about why they haven't gone public yet is because they still want to take a lot of risk (understandable, and I don't disagree).

In fact, they've taken some extremely bold moves to export user's data (see the most recent article on TechCrunch). The repercussions of some of these moves may be at the expense of some of their advertising partners (albeit unintended). Refer to: your brand is out of your control.

Conclusion

I recently met with an executive from a top five CPG brand who expressed interest in "getting access to consumer data" in order to build a relationship with his customers.

Now this company has its strategy in the right place, by asking the critical questions of "How do I leverage consumer data to create a long-lasting relationship with my customers?" and "How can I leverage their information (demo, personal preferences, etc.) in a way that helps me enhance that relationship?" If you're sending your customers to your Facebook page instead of your site, you're missing out on a wealth of data that can help you better serve your customers.

When embarking on the journey of social media marketing, be careful what you wish for. You may get that expanded social media budget, but in the process you may also forsake your relationships with your customers with no hope of future insights, spend money with little transparency on ROI, unknowingly sponsor a privacy scandal, or place your brand in a compromising situation.

Before you start, make sure you can truly justify why you can't live without a social media strategy.

Curation is the domain .tel

Curation: The key to online reputation

Those 'embedded' within the social media ecosystem have long talked of curation as the killer application that will provide the disruptive force to shift old-school industries into submission or 'pivot'.  Recently, prolific naughties blogger Steve Rubel of Micropersuasion fame and now consultant at Edelman Public Relations refreshed the debate by moving it into the applications space from the social web.  His argument was that, with the ease and access to apps, whilst the likes of the music industry have already been disrupted through free-to-stream music services that enable people to listen to curated pick lists, now traditional media outlets are being faced by a dilution of their brand through the curation of content from them through new apps for tablets and smart phones.

An Ancient Skill

The fundamental fact is that this type of curation is not new.  In 1996, a small research project that then turned into a search engine called Google, provided an algorithmic curation of web pages presented to the user when searching for 'relevant' information (or simply one result if they were 'feeling lucky'!).  Whilst the format has stayed the same substantially since then, with automation and algorithms at the heart of the service, it's a poorly-kept secret that Google employs thousands to make sure that the results expected to be delivered are maintained.

In the late 1990s, TiVo started enabling this type of curation of content on television, based on programmes watched, and enabling people to cut out or fast-forward through adverts.  Television did not die; instead, new technology providers sprang up to provide different types of channels based on genres, with services like Virgin Media and Sky in the UK providing 'on demand' television.

In music, radio stations for years have been curating music choices, picked by DJs.  Themed channels have also been around for a long time.

Curation, Distributed

What has changed is the ability for anyone to curate some form of content or culture easily.  In the same way that blogging on free platform enabled anyone to start curating information on the web and providing opinion on it, now the medium has changed to enable people to more easily (but yet not simply) create applications that can be downloaded to devices and share that curated content.

Curation in and of itself is not the creation of social media.  Those with access to cheap and standardized technology – pamphleteers in the 1640s for example – were able to curate and present information.  What has changed is the ability to reach a broad audience and, by association, be discovered by like-minded individuals, opposing factions (whether trolls or Governments) or potential customers.

The act of curation and the ability to curate is open to all, and that is the fundamental point.  The scarcity value of information and content – whether it be music, opinion or indeed contact information – has been unlocked, never to be placed back into the box.  Each and every individual with access to an internet connection and a device has the power to begin curation and stands every chance of being 'liked', +1'd or shared so that the message is distributed virally far and wide (or indeed to a small, confined community).

Marketing by Curation

No small business or individual professional today should consider themselves to be marketing themselves appropriately if they leave curation of their brand or online reputation to a third party.

Where once the purpose of a press release was to engage and inform the media (which at the time were the only channel which had the power and the reach to influence the people you wanted to communicate with), now it stands as a tool for search engine optimization to be directly discoverable as a piece of editorial by potential employers, partners or customers.

Equally important is the curation of the ways in which people can contact you.  It's critically important to make sure that your contact information is (securely) up-to-date in the distributed nature of the global business environment.  Curation is potentially the most important tool of any individual or small business today.  Make it work for you.
